The report is the result of a collaborative research effort, bringing together top CSR scholars from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland through the Nordic Centre on Corporate Responsibility (NCCR). The report is based on cases from 15 SMEs across the Nordic countries working with CSR-innovation and a literature review exploring the state of the art in corporate social innovation (CSI) research.

In order to do so a State of the Art review on CSR and innovation has been produced.

This literature review explores the state of the art in CSI research. It briefly outlines the main themes in the CSR debate and the organizational innovation literature. The paper then reviews the major objects of CSI singling out the base of the pyramid (BOP),social entrepreneurship, and eco-innovations as key themes. It closes by analyzing how social innovation is enacted at each of the four levels discussed in the first part.

On 14 May 2008, the Danish Government presented its Action Plan for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) at a press conference led by the then Danish Minister of Economic and Business Affairs, Bendt Bendtsen. The action plan aims at promoting CSR and helping Danish businesses reap more benefits from being at the global vanguard of CSR. At the same time, the plan aims at strengthening the efforts to ensure that Denmark and Danish businesses are generally associated with responsible growth.
