In june more than 1,200 executives from nearly 100 countries gathered for the UN Global Compact Summit 2010 in New York. The UN Global Compact is the world’s largest policy initiative for corporate social responsibility (CSR).
UN has appointed Denmark as a front runner of public policy for CSR. Therefore Brian Mikkelsen has chaired the ministerial meeting. This ministerial meeting resulted in a ministerial declaration, where ministers around the world urge businesses to take on their social responsibility.
However, the ministers agree that governments also play a crucial role in the area. Governments must create an enabling environment, enter into partnerships, emphasize good practises and develop tools.
Minister for Economic and Business Affair Brian Mikkelsen:
”I am proud that Denmark is seen as a front runner when it comes to corporate social responsibility. We have set clear policy goals for CSR and we provide information, training and tools for the companies. We have increased transparency by making it mandatory for the largest Danish companies to report on CSR in their annual report. These legal requirements have attracted much international attention”.
